How to Care for Your Trees After a Storm

    11/10/2020

After a storm, we want to clean up the mess in our yards and lawns as quickly as possible. But in our haste, we often tend to damage even the trees that could be saved. A good practice going forward, therefore, would be first to assess the damage and then see what you can save, especially after violent storms.
Here are a few steps to help you be more mindful of tree care after a storm.

    Assess the damage

If a tree was healthy before the storm and hasn’t suffered much damage, it will mostly recover independently. However, if you see broken branches or if more than 50% of the tree’s crown is damaged, you will require professional help to save it.

Don’t do it all by yourself

If you have to climb trees or use an overhead chainsaw, don’t risk it. Call for professional arborists as they have the necessary tools and safety equipment to mitigate the crisis.

    Take precautions

Hanging branches and downed power lines can be dangerous. Also, stay away from puddles and fence lines as they can be electrically charged.

    Remove any broken branches

You can start by removing small branches that are still limply hanging to the tree. In the case of the larger ones, leave the cutting and pruning to professional arborists.

    Don’t top your trees

You might think of cutting all the tree branches that could be a potential safety hazard during the next storm. This practice is called topping. Don’t do it, as you might end up cutting the main branches too, ultimately stunting your tree’s growth. Trees need all their strength to recover after a storm, and only a trained arborist will know what to cut and what to keep.
