How to Tell If A Plant is Healthy

    5/25/2022

It is daunting to find one of your loving plants withering and dead on one fine morning as a plant parent. However, it does happen if you cannot identify early signs of deterioration and disease in your plants. Like every living being, plants too, show sure-shot signs of health and illness. Knowing these signs can help you care for your plants better.
Here’s how you can know if your pants are healthy.
    Picture

    Grows quickly

One of the most prominent signs of a healthy plant is its growth rate. A plant that gets all the primary (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and potassium) and secondary (calcium, magnesium, and sulfur) nutrients from the soil and sunlight will proliferate at good speed. On the other hand, a plant that does not get any or all of these things is often stunted.

    Has a healthy root system

Healthy plants don’t just grow upwards but downwards too. Along with the leaves and branches, check if the roots under the soil is thriving too. If your plant roots are coming out of the pot, you need to re-pot it into a bigger pot or in the ground. If you notice any roots that look dark brown and slimy, it is a sign that they are decaying. So you should water your plants carefully.

Shows no sign of diseases or pests

A healthy plant means no disease or pests. If your plants are healthy, you won’t see any discolored leaves, stunted growth, and chalk-like powder on the leaves and stems. These powders are fungal infections that can kill your plants over time. You can also see torn and half-eaten leaves if you have a pest infestation. If you don’t know what you are dealing with, you can hire a professional tree care company near you to check out your plants and give you a treatment plan.

    Has flowers

Flowers are a vital measure of plant health as they are essential for their reproductive process. A sick and dying plant will focus on saving itself rather than reproduction. That’s why flowers stop coming on your plant if it is not in its optimal health. If you notice few or very few flowers during a plant’s flowering season, you need to look at your plant and check for any underlying illnesses.

    Holds their color

Healthy plants maintain their color throughout the season, only changing color when the weather changes. However, diseased plants change their color quickly. Keep an eye out for yellowing, browning, or whitening of leaves. They are all signs of an unhealthy plant. It can be due to sunburn, over-watering, or an underlying infection.
