The Why's and How's of Fertilizing a Tree

    11/10/2020

Isn’t it hard to believe that 40 feet tall old oak in your backyard lacks nutrients, right! But trust me, even fully grown and ancient trees can suffer from a lack of nutrients in the soil.

    Why do trees need fertilizing?

Trees and plants in the forest don’t suffer from this problem as the forest replenishes the nutrients naturally every year. But trees in human-inhabited areas don’t enjoy this luxury, which is why they need fertilization from time to time.

How do you know your tree needs fertilization?

If you notice that the tree has smaller and fewer leaves, twig growth has reduced comparatively from last year, and there are more yellow and purple leaves than green ones, then the most probable cause is lack of proper nutrients. It is time for you to fertilize the tree.

What are the different types of fertilizing methods?

So now you know that your trees need fertilization, but what kind? Well, you can use three types of fertilizers for your trees, depending on their requirements.
    • Compost is made of dead and decaying plant matter like dead leaves, grass, small plants, etc. It acts as the natural replenishment trees get in the forest.
    • Organic Fertilizers are composed of dead and decaying plant and animal matter but are not decomposed like compost. They do not harm the environment but take time to get absorbed by the trees.
    • Inorganic Fertilizers are man-made through chemical processes and are in pure chemical compound form. If not used judiciously, they can harm the environment but are preferred by many due to their quick-absorbing properties.

    How to fertilize a tree?

The quickest and easiest way to fertilize is merely spreading the fertilizers at the base of the trunk. You can also mix it with soil and water then pour it into the roots after making a few holes in the ground. But while doing so, ensure that you don’t harm the roots of the tree.

What is the best time to fertilize?

Young trees and saplings need more care and attention, and one must fertilize them at least twice in a year with small amounts of fertilizers to ensure proper growth. Mature trees are more robust and don’t require fertilization more than once in a year.

Fertilizing in particular seasons also has its benefits. Fertilizing in fall helps regain the nutrients lost during summers and helps the tree survive harsh winters. But ensure that the soil is not frozen when you fertilize.
Fertilizing in spring promotes a tree’s growth far more quickly as it is the season for a new life. It also provides strength to the tree to survive in the upcoming summer months.
